The first stop on my Go West! Adventure was at the home of my friend, Margaret. Mags and I met in Saranac Lake when she came to work with me at ACE. We quickly discovered that we had much in common (including the fact that we were born only 3 weeks apart) and became good friends. She moved to Roanoke in September, 2011 to be closer to family.
The night before I arrived in Roanoke, there was a horrible windstorm that left much of the town without power and many downed trees littering streets and yards. Luckily, it looked like the trees in her neighborhood missed the houses, which is good.
Roanoke is a charming little city with lots of character and a relaxed way of life and Margaret commented that she feels very safe walking around her neighborhood at night.
We visited the Taubman Museum and walked around the City Market. She introduced me to some local brand of chocolate milk that is pretty much just Haagen Dazs ice cream, melted. At least, that's how it tastes.
It has been wicked hot here, which is not the norm... or so she says. I have to say, I found the weather to be absolutely perfect for sitting outside on the deck and reading my book while sipping tea. Of course, that was between 6am and 8am this morning. Then it got a bit hot, so I came inside where the air conditioning was doing a fine job of cooling the house.
I've enjoyed my time with Margaret (and Abigail.. the puppy) and it was a perfect way to start this journey. Tomorrow morning I will get back on the bus and head down to Orlando, FL to spend the 4th of July at Walt Disney World.
