I've mentioned my friend, John, and how he brought me to Boulder City in 1986 and made me part of his chosen family. Well, at that time, he also introduced me to Allan. He thought we would make a perfect couple... and we did. From 1986 to about 1992, he was The One. His family became my family. Holidays and celebrations with his mom and siblings were the best. Even in 1995, when I returned to Vegas with my infant child in tow, we tried again. But, as it sometimes happens, we ended up going our separate ways. My path took me all over the country and landed me in Saranac Lake, NY (where this blog began) and Allan's took him to Reno where he married and started a family. Through the years, I was kept informed on his life and adventures through our mutual friends, but the last time I saw or talked to him was 1996.
As those of us who loved John shared our grief on Facebook, Allan's wife, Lori, sent me a message and friend request. I knew Lori from my days with Allan in Boulder City and she was among the circle of friends around John. At the memorial service for John, I got to see Allan and Lori and meet their daughter, Amy. Being able to talk to them that day was wonderful.
When they heard of my Go West Adventure, they invited me to stay with them as I came through Reno.
The added bonus for this visit was being able to go to lunch with Terri. She was married to Allan's brother when we were dating and the three toddlers she had then are all grown up now. Her daughter Sara and Sara's fiance joined us for lunch and then came to the house for a barbecue in the evening. Terri's oldest son even stopped by as well as Allan and Lori's other daughter, Robyn. The house was filled with music, laughter, and stories. It was pure magic.
There were moments when I had to fight back tears of joy. To be a part of this family again... it just leaves me speechless. And Grateful.
